DODOMA: BUSINESSES across Dodoma City have become vibrant again following the reopening of the new academic year for higher learning institutions.

Dodoma hosts one of the country’s largest university, the University of Dodoma (UDOM), along with other major institutions such as the College of Business Education (CBE), the Institute of Rural Development Planning (IRDP) and the Local Government Training Institute (LGTI) in Hombolo.

A ‘Daily News’ spot check observed that most commuter buses operating between Dodoma City and UDOM were bustling with passengers, the majority of them students returning for the new semester.

Amir Juma, a conductor on one of the buses, said that with the academic year resuming, most operators return their vehicles to the road to avoid losses that occur when universities are closed.

“Now it is our season. We operate comfortably because we are assured of passengers. What matters is ensuring that vehicles are in good condition, because it is risky to experience breakdowns with passengers on board,” he said.

Apart from transport services, food vendors are also benefiting from the reopening of universities as their core customers, students have returned to the city for the new academic season.

Agness Fred, a food vendor operating outside UDOM campuses, said most students make upfront payments for meals for the entire semester, enabling businesses like hers to operate smoothly.

“After receiving their funds, popularly known as boom, students prefer to pay in advance to be assured of meals throughout the semester,” she noted.

Around CBE, service providers offering secretarial and stationery services are also recording increased business as students settle in.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has called on all university students nationwide to report to their respective institutions on time, stressing that punctuality and active participation are essential for academic success.

According to the Ministry’s official academic calendar, first-year students were expected to report for orientation on November 17, 2025, while continuing students are required to return by November 24, 2025, marking the start of regular academic activities.

In a statement issued by Permanent Secretary Professor Carolyne Nombo, the Ministry emphasised that timely reporting and adherence to academic schedules are critical for effective learning.

“Students should ensure they report on time, follow the planned timetable and actively participate in all academic programmes. This will not only enhance their learning experience but also contribute to their personal and professional development,” she said.
