DAR ES SALAAM: GSM Group has reached a historic milestone after receiving 100 fuel transport trucks from Sino Truck Tanzania, a move expected to boost efficiency in the country’s transport chain and the wider East African region.

Speaking at the reception ceremony in Dar es Salaam today, GSM Group Chief Executive Officer Benson Mahenya said the arrival of the trucks is part of the company’s broader strategy to expand fuel transportation within and beyond Tanzania’s borders.

“Today is a historic day for us. We have received 100 fuel trucks as the first batch, and within the next 20 days we will receive another 100 to complete our plan of acquiring 200 trucks before the end of this year,” Mahenya said.

Mahenya revealed that the partnership between GSM and Sinotruk both the truck and fuel divisions has been long-standing and highly successful.

“Since we brought in our first trucks, we have purchased a total of 1,630 trucks of various capacities 3, 5, 7, and 30 tonnes. As time goes on, we continue doing business with them because these trucks are the backbone of the economy,” he said.

He noted that the trucks support economic growth by transporting fuel, raw materials, and finished goods within Tanzania and to neighboring countries, thereby facilitating regional trade integration.

Mahenya added that GSM was not previously involved in fuel transportation, but through a long-term plan, the company has officially entered the sector and introduced the new HOWO truck brand, making GSM the first to bring it into the country.

For his part, Sun Yang Yang, General Manager of Sino Truck Tanzania, said the relationship between the company and GSM is built on trust and long-term expectations.

“Since 2021, GSM has purchased more than 1,000 trucks from us. This is evidence of the strong confidence they have in our products,” he said.

He added that Sino Truck expects to open its second factory in Tanzania by 2026, a move anticipated to create more than 200 jobs and stimulate growth in the automotive and spare parts sector.
