DODOMA: THE government has directed contractors undertaking emergency works on the Gairo– Dodoma Road to expedite the placement of the top asphalt layer to ease traffic flow and eliminate long queues on diversion routes.

Minister for Works, Mr Abdallah Ulega, issued the directive at the weekend during an inspection of emergency projects in Dodoma Region.

He instructed contractors to complete asphalt works within one week along a two-kilometre stretch at Mbande in Kongwa District, and within two weeks at Pandambili and Silwa.

The minister said the sixth phase government prioritises local contractors and emphasised that they must demonstrate professionalism, capacity and quality in executing projects on schedule.

He urged the Ministry to continue prioritising competent local firms to ensure value for money and timely delivery.

Mr Ulega also directed Kongwa District authorities to strengthen security throughout the implementation period to allow contractors to work without disruptions.

Projects inspected included emergency bridge and embankment works at Mbande (CERC), the Mtanana emergency works, the Kibaigwa truck parking area and the emergency bridges and embankments at Pandambili and Silwa.

Dodoma Regional Manager for TANROADS, Eng Zuhura Amani, said works at Mbande have reached 88 per cent and cost 7.9bn/-.

She added that 95.4 per cent of the project at Pandambili and Silwa has been completed at a cost of 2.8bn/-.
