DAR ES SALAAM: THE Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI) has begun providing specialist surgery services to treat hand injury and soft tissue reconstruction for patients facing this challenge.

Speaking during the exercise, the Executive Director of MOI, Ambassador Dr Mpoki Ulisubisya said the move is a major achievement for the institution and the health sector in the country in general.

“We have successfully begun treating the nerves in the hands and feet. This service will benefit patients who are unable to lift objects or who have difficulty walking properly after an accident,” said Dr Ulisubisya.

He added that the surgery is currently available only at the MOI institution in the country after the institution’s doctors received specialized training and special skills to perform the surgery.

“This service has started after our doctor completed his specialization studies and gained expertise in treating and performing surgery on injured nerves,” he added.

For his part, the Specialist in Hand and Foot Injuries, Dr Hellen Machagge, explained that the problem of injured large nerves causes small muscles to fail to work, a condition that causes paralysis of the arms or legs.

“In this surgery, we move the nerves to remove one part from the affected area and enable the arm or leg to start working properly as it was before the injury,” she said.

This is a continuation of the MOI Institute, continuing to introduce specialist and specialized services that are not available in the country, and relieve them of the inconvenience and high cost of following the service abroad.
