DAR ES SALAAM: FOR the first time, the Muhimbili Institute of Neurology (MOI) is set to perform a state-of-the-art brain tumor removal surgery using a new technology to 10 people.
Speaking at the Fifth International Conference of Spine, Neurology and Brain Specialists being held today in Dar es Salaam involving leading doctors from the University of Colorado in the United States, the leading doctor of Neurology, Neurology and Spine to provide MOI, DK Nicephorous Rutabasibwa said they will also provide a palliative care service.
“There is a medicine we use and if you use it, the tumor shows itself directly, it enables the doctor to remove the entire tumor without leaving anything behind. The new technology that we are doing will use a microscope and ultrasound and the medicines that we brought.
He added, “By using that technology because we already have specialists who have come to teach us, we rely on treating patients who we have prepared for that because the technology will remain with them, we will be doing it ourselves.

Opening the meeting, the Executive Director of MOI, Ambassador Dr. Mpoki Ulisubisya, said that in addition to exchanging ideas through various topics that are presented, there is another type of training that will be provided to specialists who are emerging to provide services to patients who have undergone treatment, how to monitor them.
“Here we will have nurses who will be taught how to care for critically ill patients who have undergone surgery in the brain, we will have rehabilitation specialists for the first time, MOI is providing training to doctors who will be managing the rehabilitation work for patients who need it,” he said.

He said they are implementing this strategy due to the expectation of providing rehabilitation services as there is a special rehabilitation section that is being built in the Mbweni area.
“There will be a gathering to train these specialists after the topic is presented in practice, specialists will perform surgeries on the intracranial routes, there are people from various African countries who have come to gain knowledge, we have had these relationships with the University of Colorado from the United States, they have learned about the load of materials to use for surgeries in areas of the nervous system,” said Dr. Mpoki.
For his part, Prof. Ryan Ormond from the University of Colorado in the United States who is also the international coordinator of the conference said the conference will cover many topics including recent scientific developments in the control of various brain and spinal cord tumors.
“We are doing operations in the operating rooms, important technologies will be used, we will conduct treatment management to reduce large heads in children, treatment of critically ill neurological patients, nursing education and neurological rehabilitation,” he emphasized.
