DAR ES SALAAM: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals has urged TANESCO to continue expanding electricity distribution to areas currently without access, enabling the country to benefit from increased revenue while citizens gain reliable electricity services.

The statement was made today, February 20, 2026, in Dar es Salswaam by the committee chair, Subira Mgalu, during a visit to the Zanzibar Electricity Distribution Centre at RAS Kilomoni and the Kinyerezi I and II power stations. Mgalu highlighted that priority areas needing electricity include industrial zones, mining sites, and households.

“We recognize that the election manifesto outlines that every district should have an industrial zone. Many activities require electricity. As a committee, we are satisfied with the progress made so far, but we continue to advise the government to ensure that generated electricity is efficiently transmitted and distributed so that it is available consistently and reliably,” Mgalu said.

He added, “We are grateful that power outages have significantly decreased. Tanesco’s performance has improved, and electricity is now available consistently. When electricity is used in homes and industries, it greatly contributes to increasing government revenue.”

Meanwhile, Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Innocent Luoga, representing the Deputy Minister of Energy, said the committee’s directives have been received. He further noted that President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s vision is to reach 8,000 megawatts by 2030, and the government will ensure the expansion of electricity generation sources across the country.
