DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has called on sports clubs to act as ambassadors in raising awareness among Tanzanians on the importance of voluntarily paying taxes, describing tax compliance as essential to the country’s economic growth.
The call was made yesterday by TRA Commissioner General Yusuph Mwenda during launching of the TRA United Sports Club Board in Dar es Salaam.
Speaking at the event, Mwenda said the initiative was not only aimed at building a competitive football team, but also at promoting public awareness about taxation.
“This initiative aims not only to develop a competitive football team but also to educate Tanzanians on the importance of voluntarily paying taxes, which is vital for the country’s economic growth,” he said.
During the launch, Edmund Kawamala was introduced as the club’s Board Chairman alongside eight board members: former Tanzania Football Federation General Secretary Wilfred Kidao, Angelina Ngalula, Juma Kisongo, Kamna Shomari, Zahoro Salum, Paul Walalaze and Elikunda Mndeme. One remaining board position is expected to be filled soon.
Mwenda urged the newly appointed board to manage the team professionally and ensure it becomes a strong contender in both local and international competitions.
He further noted that the club has a responsibility to align its activities with TRA’s mission by using sport as a platform to help citizens understand the value of voluntary tax compliance.

“I trust that the board will take every step necessary to make citizens see tax compliance as a civic duty,” Mwenda said.
He added that the team would also provide a platform for players, including international stars, to contribute to the national economy through taxes on their earnings, thereby strengthening the link between sport and national development.
For his part, TRA United Board Chairman Edmund Kawamala praised Commissioner Mwenda for what he described as a visionary initiative and for his support of the team.
“The Board will work to ensure the team not only succeeds on the field but also raises awareness about taxation among Tanzanians in an engaging and impactful way,” Kawamala said.
