
R ES SALAAM: THE Tanzanian government has reaffirmed its commitment to investing in sports infrastructure in the country, particularly basketball, to nurture new talent and transform the sector into a major source of economic growth and youth employment.
The remarks were made by Deputy Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Hamis Mwinjuma, on the night of February 20, 2026, during the official launch of the 2026 Ramadhan Stars League basketball tournament held at the Don Bosco grounds in Dar es Salaam.
Speaking to players and fans who attended the event, Mwinjuma said the government has developed a strategic plan to improve the environment for basketball, a sport that continues to grow rapidly in popularity across the country.

He noted that the government recognizes the significant contribution of sports to national development and is taking steps to build and upgrade infrastructure that will support the growth of the game.
“Our goal is not only to nurture talent, but also to ensure that sports become an integral part of the national economy and provide sustainable employment opportunities for our youth,” Mwinjuma said.
