ARUSHA: AZAMPESA has launched an innovative digital payment solution dubbed ‘Pay Like a Local,’ enabling tourists to transact seamlessly across Tanzania without the need for cash, ATMs or physical bank cards.

The service, developed in collaboration with Visa, was officially launched over the weekend in Arusha by the Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Mr Hamad Chande.

Speaking during the launch, Mr Chande described the initiative as timely and strategic, noting that it aligns with national efforts to modernise tourism services and enhance visitors’ experiences.

“One of the challenges we face is the continued use of cash. You have brought a solution to this challenge by introducing digital payment services for tourists visiting our country,” he said.

He emphasised that global travellers increasingly expect convenience, speed and security in financial transactions, adding that digital platforms must guarantee strong protection of users’ data.

Mr Chande said the innovation demonstrates practical support for President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s campaign to promote Tanzania’s tourist attractions through international documentaries such as The Royal Tour and Amazing Tanzania.

He noted that tourist arrivals have risen sharply from 788,933 in 2021 to 2.3 million currently, underscoring the need for reliable and modern payment infrastructure.

“With the increase in visitor numbers, we must ensure they can pay easily wherever they go. Digital payments are essential in today’s tourism economy,” he said.

The Deputy Minister urged AzamPesa and Visa to expand the service across East African Community countries and prepare for the anticipated influx of visitors during next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

AzamPesa Chief Executive Officer, Mr Firas Ahmad, said the service connects international travellers directly to Tanzania’s economy in a secure, affordable and inclusive manner.

“It strengthens the tourism sector while accelerating the growth of the country’s digital financial ecosystem,” he said.

He described the platform as a tourism innovation and a milestone in advancing financial inclusion and the digital economy.

The application allows visitors to download the AzamPesa app, register online, transfer funds instantly from international cards to a mobile wallet and transact through Tanzania’s widely accepted mobile money network.

Visa Country Manager Mr Victor Makele said the platform bridges the payment gap between international travellers and local merchants.

He noted that fewer than three per cent of local shops operate card machines, meaning most businesses rely on mobile money.

“The platform allows tourists to transact directly within that ecosystem, creating a seamless experience that benefits both visitors and businesses,” he said.
