BARIADI: THE Managing Director of the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), Lazaro Twange, has conducted an inspection tour of ongoing power projects in Simiyu Region to assess their progress and ensure timely completion.

During the visit on February 21, 2026, Twange inspected the construction of the Imalilo Power Receiving and Distribution Substation as well as the 220-kilovolt (220kV) transmission line being built from Shinyanga to Simiyu.

Speaking after the inspection, Twange said the Imalilo substation project began in October 2025 and is being implemented by TANESCO’s in-house experts. The project is expected to be completed in May 2026.

“After a long time, we have started implementing this project using our internal experts. We began in October 2025 and expect to complete it in May 2026,” Twange said.

He explained that residents of Bariadi currently depend on electricity supplied from neighboring regions of Shinyanga, Mwanza and Mara, a situation that affects service quality due to the long transmission distances.

According to Twange, completion of the Imalilo substation will strengthen electricity infrastructure and address the existing challenges, enabling Bariadi residents to access reliable power starting June 2026.

“The construction of this substation will enhance infrastructure and eliminate power quality challenges caused by long transmission distances,” he added.

Currently, implementation of the Imalilo Power Receiving and Distribution Substation stands at 20.75 percent completion. The project costs approximately 8 billion Tanzanian shillings and is fully funded by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania in its first phase.
