DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzanian government has announced a move to empower small-scale miners to help them achieve their goals and grow the mining sector,the Minerals Minister, Anthony Mavunde, notified today, February 23, 2026.
He said the initiative includes establishing a strong regulatory framework and continuing to issue licenses in areas that had remained inactive for a long time.
He made the remarks in Dar es Salaam today, February 23, 2026, during the signing ceremony of a Special Program for Small-Scale Gold Miners between CRDB Bank and the Mining Commission.
Minister Mavunde added that the mining sector plays a significant role in employment and domestic revenue generation, noting that more than 18,000 people are employed in the sector.
He also commended CRDB Bank for providing affordable loans to small-scale miners, emphasizing that empowering small-scale miners is one of the key ways to boost Tanzania’s economy.

On his part, the Chief Executive Officer of CRDB Bank, Abdulmajid Nsekela, said the Special Program for Small-Scale Gold Miners is a sustainable and inclusive initiative agreed upon with the Mining Commission to provide affordable loans with enabling terms to small-scale miners.
He noted that the bank has already disbursed 189bn/- to the mining sector to strengthen mining operations and increase productivity.
Dr Nsekela said the special empowerment program aims to bring about real transformation in productive small-scale mining, add value to production, and contribute to national economic growth.
He emphasized that small-scale miners are not small in their contribution, but rather a vital pillar of the country’s economy, as they largely sustain the mining sector and contribute to employment, income, and the welfare of many families.
He added that CRDB Bank, as a leading bank in the country, is not solely focused on doing business but also serves as a catalyst for economic growth to build a better Tanzania.
