MUSOMA: THE Tanzanian government has embarked on rehabilitating the Musoma Port so as to open more economic opportunities in the Mara region.
The Minister for Transport, Prof Makame Mbarawa revealed this during his visit to the Lake Zone where he toured around the Musoma Port noting that the government plans to rehabilitate and improve all Great Lakes ports, including those on Lake Nyasa, Tanganyika, and Victoria, with the aim of strengthening water transport in the country, increasing revenue for citizens and respective regions, and boosting regional economic integration.

Speaking after visiting Musoma Port in Mara Region, Minister Mbarawa noted that Lake Victoria, on the Mara side, is the only area bordering both Uganda and Kenya, making it a vital port that calls for improving Musoma Port to open up Mara Region and enhance regional connectivity.

Elaborating, he said that the government has continued to invest in port infrastructure, ship construction, and rehabilitation to strengthen water transport across all Great Lakes in the country, aiming to connect Tanzania with neighboring countries.
Speaking on behalf of the region, Mara Regional Commissioner, Colonel Alfredi Mtambi, said that Musoma Port is strategic, and its improvements will make Musoma town a major hub for regional trade, fishing, and tourism.
