MOROGORO: THE Tanzanian government has hailed the 700bn/- investment by the Kilombero Sugar Company for its significant contribution to reducing the country’s employment challenges, especially in critical sectors such as engineering and other technical professions.
The Minister of State in the President’s Office for Planning and Investment, Prof. Kitila Mkumbo, made the remarks yesterday during a working visit to Kilombero District in Morogoro Region, where he toured the sugar factory. During the visit, the Minister noted that the investment has created numerous direct and indirect job opportunities and strengthened the industrial sector, which plays a key role in boosting the national economy.
“Such a large investment not only increases the production of essential products like sugar but also stimulates the development of related sectors, including sugarcane farming, transportation, and distribution services,” he said.
The Minister also urged other investors in the country to emulate the example of Kilombero Sugar Factory by giving priority to local human resources in employment. He emphasized that this approach will help reduce unemployment, increase citizens’ income, and enhance overall community well-being.

Prof Mkumbo further highlighted that Tanzania has made significant progress toward self-sufficiency in sugar production. Previously, the factory produced between 130 and 260 tons, but improvements in infrastructure, technology, and production expansion have significantly increased output, helping meet domestic market demand.
“Farmers and industries that rely on sugar now benefit from increased local production, which reduces dependence on imports, strengthens food security and industrial raw materials, and contributes to national GDP growth,” he said.
The visit is part of the government’s efforts to monitor the implementation of major strategic projects, ensure that investments benefit the nation, and continue creating a friendly environment that attracts more investors in the production and industrial sectors.
