DAR ES SALAAM: Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) has conveyed heartfelt condolences to the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam, Jude Thaddeus Ruwa’ichi, following the death of retired Archbishop Polycarp Cardinal Pengo.

Speaking after signing the condolence book at St Joseph Cathedral in Dar es Salaam, CCM Secretary-General Dr Asha-Rose Migiro said she delivered the message of condolence on behalf of CCM Chairperson, President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

In her message, Dr Migiro described the late Cardinal Pengo as a shepherd of comfort and hope, a spiritual leader marked by wisdom, humility and unwavering moral conviction.

She said beyond his dedicated service to the Church, Cardinal Pengo made a profound contribution to strengthening national unity, promoting moral values, guiding youth development and upholding accountability among leaders.

“Cardinal Pengo has left an enduring legacy of service to God, service to the Nation and service to society. His life and teachings will remain a guiding light for generations to come,” she said.

CCM further asked the Catholic Church and all believers to find solace during this period of mourning and asked God to grant eternal rest to the departed soul.

Cardinal Pengo died on February 19, 2026, at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) where he was receiving treatment.

According to the burial programme, the late Cardinal’s body will arrive at St Joseph Cathedral on February 27, 2026, for the faithful to pay their last respects, with the Requiem Mass scheduled for February 28, 2026, at the Pugu Pilgrimage Centre in Dar es Salaam.
