DODOMA: THE Football Association for Persons with Disabilities in Dodoma has launched a new initiative to form dedicated football teams for young people living with disabilities.

The association says the programme aims to increase access to sport and promote inclusion, while helping young people develop their skills and potential.

Speaking recently, the association’s chairperson, Bam Bilasho, said an awareness campaign had begun targeting youths with limb disabilities, particularly those who have lost one arm or one leg.

He said they are being encouraged to register for training ahead of the formation of teams.

“The association has launched an awareness campaign targeting youths with limb disabilities to register for training and preparation ahead of team formation,” Bilasho said.

He said the programme also seeks to encourage parents and guardians to support children with disabilities by allowing them to take part in sport.

“Football can play a key role in building self-confidence, creating income opportunities, and opening pathways to regional, national and international competitions,” he said.

Mr Bilasho added that the aim is to build strong and competitive teams in Dodoma. He called on the public to encourage eligible youths to come forward so that the process of forming teams can begin.

Through the initiative, he said, young people with disabilities will have the opportunity to showcase their talents and represent Dodoma and Tanzania in tournaments within and outside the country.

He added that structured participation in sport can help develop physical fitness, confidence, teamwork and leadership skills, while also nurturing sporting talent and promoting greater community acceptance.
