MWANZA: MINISTER for Transport, Professor Makame Mbarawa has expressed satisfaction with the progress of construction works on Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Lot Five, which covers the Mwanza–Isaka section, noting that the project has reached 68 per cent completion.

He made the remarks yesterday during an official visit to Misungwi District in Mwanza Region.

“I am pleased with the pace of construction of this project. Reaching 68 per cent is not a small achievement; it is a very significant milestone. Congratulations to the contractor and all workers for the great job you are doing,” he said.

Prof Mbarawa explained that construction of bridges and several culverts has reached 91 per cent completion, indicating substantial progress on the project. He further stated that three buildings will be constructed at Mwanza Station.

The main building will have the capacity to accommodate 900 passengers, while the other two will be designated for commercial activities.

In addition, the minister noted that a modern, high quality abattoir is expected to be built at Fela Station to expand economic opportunities for residents in the area.

In another development, Prof Mbarawa urged all project workers to act with integrity and serve as custodians of the project’s assets.

He said that any worker found stealing cement, fuel, or other materials would face strict legal action.

He added that the Mwanza–Isaka SGR section spans a total of 341 kilometres and is being constructed at a cost of 3.06tri/-.

On his part, Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) Director General, Engineer Masanja Machibya, thanked the minister for visiting the project and assured him that it would be completed by 2028.

“I assure you that by 2028 this project will be completed and ready for public use. All transportation activities from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza will commence,” he said.

Misungwi District Commissioner, Ms Johari Samiz said the passage of the project through the district will create various opportunities for young people.

She noted that the ongoing construction of Fela Station will generate employment, further boosted by the planned construction of the modern abattoir in the area.
