DAR ES SALAAM: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan, has directed the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Emmanuel Tayari, to closely supervise all activities related to the construction and development of pharmaceutical manufacturing industries in the country, along with their investors, in order for Tanzania to achieve at least 80 percent self-sufficiency in the production of medicines and medical supplies by 2030.

President Samia issued the directive today, February 9, 2026, during a swearing-in ceremony for leaders held at the Chamwino State House in Dodoma.

Speaking at the event, President Samia emphasized the need to remove obstacles hindering investment in the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector, noting that many potential investors are willing to invest in Tanzania but face various challenges, including land-related issues and bureaucratic bottlenecks.

“I know you can oversee pharmaceutical industries and their investors. Go and supervise them, understand who the investors are. Many people are eager to invest but are hindered by land issues and our own bureaucracy. I want you to ensure that pharmaceutical factories are established within our country so that by 2030 we are self-reliant by no less than 80 percent,” President Samia said.

She further instructed Mr Tayari to ensure full oversight of the entire process of establishing pharmaceutical industries, eliminate all barriers to investment, and attract both local and foreign investors, measures expected to boost domestic pharmaceutical production and reduce reliance on imported products.
