ZANZIBAR: MEMBERS of the Zanzibar House of Representatives have been informed that the government is in the final stages of reviewing public servants’ welfare, with an official announcement on the minimum wage and overall salary adjustments expected once the process is completed.

The assurance was given by the Minister of State in the President’s Office (Constitution, Legal Affairs, Public Service and Good Governance), Dr Haroun Ali Suleiman, while responding to a question during the House session.

Dr Suleiman said that since assuming office in 2020, the eighth phase government has undertaken various measures to improve public servants’ welfare, aiming to boost productivity, efficiency, motivation and accountability in the workplace.

Between 2020 and 2024, the government implemented several key reforms, including general salary adjustments for ministries and government-subsidised institutions in July 2022, an increase in leave allowance from 100,000/- to 200,000/- every two years, effective July 2024 and revisions for public corporations, authorities and self-financing institutions in August 2023.

Others include introduction of a monthly transport allowance of 50,000/- for all public servants in July 2024, increased food and housing allowances for officers and members of Zanzibar’s special departments in July 2024, revised allowances for government drivers and private secretaries to leaders and adjustments to domestic travel allowances for leaders and public servants across various ranks.

“Regarding salary increases, the government is still working on the matter. I urge the Honourable Member to remain patient until the process is complete,” Dr Suleiman said.
