DAR ES SALAAM: MUHIMBILI National Hospital (MNH) has received medical equipment worth approximately 183m/- from Operation Smile, including surgical microscopes and training microscopes (Skill Lab).

The equipment is expected to increase the hospital’s capacity to provide more modern services to patients requiring reconstructive surgery.

In another step, Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) and Operation Smile have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening cooperation in the training and provision of specialist services, especially in the area of reconstructive surgery (Microsurgery).

The agreement aims to increase the skills of these professionals, exchange professional experience, and improve the quality of services provided to the public.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Muhimbili Executive Director, Dr Delilah Kimambo, said that the partnership between MNH and Operation Smile reflects a shared commitment to promoting equity in health services by improving the quality of specialist services, especially in reconstructive surgery, as well as building the capacity of local specialists through practical training, knowledge exchange and the use of modern technologies.

For his part, the Representative of the Operation Smile Institute of Reconstructive Surgery in Tanzania, Dr Hamid Mandali said that the partnership aims to disseminate modern skills and techniques in reconstructive surgery to more specialists as well as continue to support MNH through practical training and the exchange of professional experience, to strengthen local capacity and ensure that quality, safe and high-quality services reach the majority of citizens.

The event was also attended by the Swedish Ambassador to Tanzania, Charlotta Ozaki Macias, who stressed the importance of international cooperation in building local capacity and strengthening sustainable health care systems.
