ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR is moving closer to a future of high-speed home internet connectivity as the government prepares to sign a major fibre-optic agreement with Mixx by Yas under the Fibre to the Home (FTTH) project.
Minister for Communication, Information Technology and Innovation, Mr Mudrik Ramadhan Soraga said the project aims to connect households across Unguja and Pemba, delivering reliable, high-speed internet directly into homes.
The company has committed to invest more than 20 million US dollars in the project, with the final contract currently at the Attorney General’s Office for last-stage legal approval. Initially, the rollout targeted 60,000 homes.
However, following negotiations, the government pushed for a broader expansion.
“When implementation begins, over 100,000 homes will be connected in the first phase alone,” Mr Soraga said.

The long-term plan is even more ambitious, with the government targeting widespread fibre connectivity across Zanzibar. According to the 2022 National Census, Zanzibar has 380,260 households.
“This is the true meaning of a digital economy. Citizens should enjoy reliable internet at home just as they do on their mobile phones,” he said, noting that many countries have achieved rapid development through strong digital infrastructure.
Mr Soraga stressed that the project is designed to reach every Zanzibari household, regardless of income level, describing access to digital services as a basic necessity in the modern era.
