DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening copyright protection and safeguarding creativity across Africa through its participation in the Regional Committee for Africa meeting of the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC), held in Paris, France.

A delegation from the Copyright Society of Tanzania (COSOTA), led by Acting Chief Executive Officer and Copyright Administrator Naomi Mungure, attended the June 1–2 meeting, where discussions focused on emerging opportunities and challenges in copyright management, including the growing impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the creative industry.

Additionally, the meeting explored issues related to registration and verification systems for creative works, royalty collection and distribution mechanisms, and strategies for enhancing cooperation among copyright institutions across Africa.

The discussions highlighted the need for stronger frameworks to protect creators’ rights and ensure they benefit fairly from their work in the digital era.

Following the meeting, the delegation briefed Tanzania’s Ambassador to France, Saidi Othman Yakubu, on key outcomes and developments where the ambassador commended the team for effectively representing Tanzania and stressed the importance of strengthening national copyright systems to protect innovation, increase artists’ earnings and support the growth of the creative economy.

Ambassador Yakubu also pledged closer collaboration between the Tanzanian Embassy in France and local institutions participating in international forums to ensure the country’s interests are well represented and that emerging opportunities benefit Tanzanian artists and creators.

The experts also shared updates on ongoing copyright research initiatives and their role in strengthening the protection of creative works across the continent.
