MOSHI: VICTOR Joseph of Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club (DGC) and Nuru Mollel of Arusha Gymkhana Club (AGC) emerged overall winners of the Tanzania Amateur Stroke Play Championship following outstanding performances at TPC Golf Club in Moshi, Kilimanjaro region, over the weekend.

The 54-hole championship, one of Tanzania’s premier golf events, attracted the country’s leading amateur and professional golfers in a tournament organised by TPC Golf Club in collaboration with the Tanzania Golf Union (TGU).

Joseph produced a composed and consistent performance over three rounds to finish on 10-under-par 206, clinching the elite amateur title by a single stroke ahead of Isiaka Dunia of TPDF Lugalo Golf Club, who finished on 9-under-par 207.

The DGC golfer set the pace from the opening round with an impressive 67 before adding rounds of 71 and 68 to seal the championship in the par 72 course, earning the 1.5m/- winner’s prize and valuable World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points.

Dunia mounted a spirited challenge with rounds of 69, 71 and a tournament-best finalround 67, but had to settle for second place and a 950,000/- prize.

Enoshi Wanyeche, also of TPDF Lugalo Golf Club, claimed third place on 1-over-par 217 to pocket 700,000/-, while promising youngster Julius Mwinzani of DGC finished fourth on 7-overpar 223, earning 600,000/-.

TPC Golf Club’s Emmanuel Lucas, Neema Olomi of AGC and host player George Sembi shared fifth place after each finished on 11-over-par 227.

In the professional category, Mollel delivered a commanding display to capture the title on 9-under-par 135 after rounds of 70 and 65 in the 36-hole competition.

Fadhyl Nkya of TPDF Lugalo Golf Club finished runnerup on 1-over-par 145 (72, 73), while teammate Frank Mwinuka claimed third place on 2-over-par 146 (71, 75).

AGC’s John Said placed fourth on 4-over-par 148, while John Leonce and Abdallah Yusuph shared fifth place on 5-overpar 149.

TPC Golf Club Captain, Jaffary Ally, said the championship continues to grow in stature by providing golfers with an opportunity to earn valuable WAGR points while showcasing the country’s top golfing talent.

“The championship remains an important event on the national golf calendar. It gives our leading amateurs the chance to earn WAGR points and help to raise the standard,” he said.
