DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA has secured more than US dollar 1 million (approximately 2.63bn/-) from the United States to strengthen its rapid Ebola preparedness and response capabilities amid recent outbreaks reported in neighbouring countries.
The funding will support efforts to enhance surveillance, improve emergency response systems, and bolster the country’s readiness to prevent and contain potential Ebola cases.
The assistance, combined with technical expertise, will strengthen Ebola preparedness in both Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.
It will focus on improving disease surveillance, laboratory systems, infection prevention and control, case management, risk communication and community engagement, preparedness at points of entry, emergency coordination and workforce development, particularly in regions considered at greater risk of cross-border transmission.
According to a statement issued yesterday by the US Embassy in Tanzania, the funding will support the government in enhancing preparedness for Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus, even as the country has not recorded any confirmed cases.
“This support comes in response to recent Ebola outbreaks reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, reinforcing ongoing efforts to protect the health and safety of Tanzanians,” the statement reads in part.
It adds, “While Tanzania has not recorded any confirmed Ebola cases, the country continues to proactively intensify preparedness measures based on the national contingency plans”.

The embassy said that given the frequent crossborder movement with neighbouring countries, these actions are aimed at ensuring the country remains vigilant and well-prepared to prevent, detect and respond to any potential Ebola threat.
After the regional outbreaks were officially announced, the Ministry of Health convened technical directors, US government agencies and international partners to coordinate preparedness efforts and align response activities across the country.
