
DAR ES SALAAM: ZANZIBAR President Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has called for continued investment in leadership, stronger health systems and youth empowerment as the best way to preserve the legacy of former President Benjamin William Mkapa.
Dr Mwinyi made the statement on Thursday during the Fourth Benjamin William Mkapa Legacy Forum and the 20th anniversary celebrations of the Benjamin William Mkapa Foundation (BMF), held at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre (JNICC) in Dar es Salaam.
Speaking at the event, the President said that honouring the late President Mkapa goes beyond remembering his achievements, but requires advancing initiatives that strengthen healthcare delivery, develop human resources and empower young people to shape Africa’s future.
Dr Mwinyi, who is Patron of the Benjamin William Mkapa Foundation, said the organisation has remained an important partner of the Zanzibar government in strengthening health systems, developing health sector professionals and improving primary healthcare services.

During the event, the Isle’s President received a special award recognising his contribution to the growth and development of the Benjamin William Mkapa Foundation, presented by Vice-President Dr Emmanuel John Nchimbi.
He also presented Dr Nchimbi with the Leadership Award for Health Transformation on behalf of President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
