Police warn against violence, vigilante justice targeting childrenPolice warn against violence, vigilante justice targeting children

TANGA: THE Tanga Regional Police Commander, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) Almachius Muchunguzi, has raised alarm over recent incidents of extreme violence against children in the region, warning that domestic violence and vigilante justice continue to pose serious threats to minors.

Speaking in Tanga, SACP Muchunguzi said police investigations into recent cases reveal a disturbing pattern of violence, often perpetrated by adults known to the children or within their immediate communities.

“Any form of violence against a child is a serious criminal offence. Communities must understand that harming a child, or taking the law into one’s own hands, will not be tolerated,” he said.

He said police have intensified patrols and surveillance in residential areas, public spaces and places where children frequently gather, as part of efforts to prevent crimes and respond promptly to reports. However, the police commander stressed that effective child protection requires active cooperation from parents, guardians and the wider community.

“Police action alone is not enough. The first line of protection for a child begins at home and within the community,” he said.

SACP Muchunguzi cited recent cases that have shocked the region and underscored the urgent need for stronger child protection mechanisms. In one incident on October 8, 2025, in Kiloza Village, Korogwe District, a three-year-old child sustained severe injuries after his right leg was severed with a sharp object.

Investigations revealed that the suspect, Mr Abraham Shelutete, committed the act following a domestic dispute driven by jealousy. After investigations were completed and evidence presented in court, the suspect was convicted on November 19, 2025 and sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment.

The court also ordered him to pay 100,000/- in compensation to the victim. In another case, police said that on December 24, 2025, Mr Isaka Ngulizi, a resident of Welei, was arraigned in court for allegedly severing three fingers of an 11-year-old Standard Four pupil.

The incident reportedly occurred on December 2, 2025, after the suspect accused the child of attempting to steal from his house.

“These cases demonstrate that the law will take its course. Violence against children, regardless of circumstances, is indefensible,” SACP Muchunguzi said. He issued a strong warning against vigilante justice, noting that such acts are criminal offences that often deny victims due process and justice.

“The correct course of action is to report suspected crimes to the police. Anyone who inflicts harm on another person, especially a child, will face the full force of the law,” he said.

Police also acknowledged the role of community-based organisations in preventing violence against children. In Tanga, the Tanga Youth Development Association (TAYOTA) has been working with schools, parents and local leaders to raise awareness on child rights and the importance of early reporting.

SACP Muchunguzi urged communities to remain vigilant and to prioritise the safety, dignity and rights of children at all times.
