DAR ES SALAAM: THE former Tanzanian President, Jakaya Kikwete, has received a Kiswahili translation of Plato’s classic philosophical work ‘The Republic’, translated by Tanzania’s founding father Julius Nyerere, in a move highlighting the country’s enduring intellectual and leadership legacy.
The former President was handed the book ‘Jamhuri na Plato’ by Mkuki na Nyota Publishers Director Walter Bgoya in Dar es Salaam.

The publication brings Nyerere’s translation of Plato’s renowned philosophical dialogue, originally centred on Socrates’ discussions about governance, justice, human nature and the ideal state to contemporary readers.
The translation places Plato’s ideas within an African context, emphasising ethical leadership, civic responsibility and the pursuit of a just society, themes closely associated with Nyerere’s own political philosophy and nation-building vision.
