DAR ES SALAAM: BARRICK Mining Corporation has reported significant progress in its sustainability performance, highlighting improvements in workplace safety, local economic participation, environmental stewardship and community development across its global operations.

According to the company’s 2025 Sustainability Report and accompanying performance data released this week, Barrick achieved a 60 per cent reduction in its total recordable injury frequency rate since 2020 and a 28 per cent year-on-year decline in lost-time injuries, reflecting continued efforts to strengthen workplace safety and prevent fatalities.

The report shows that Barrick continued to deepen its commitment to responsible mining practices by advancing initiatives in human rights, water stewardship, biodiversity management and climate resilience.

The company said local participation remained a key pillar of its sustainability strategy, with 96 per cent of its workforce and 76 per cent of its suppliers sourced from host countries during the reporting period.

Barrick also spent more than 7.1 billion US dollars on local and host-country suppliers, a move aimed at supporting economic growth and business development in communities surrounding its operations.

In addition, the mining giant invested over 62 million US dollars in community-led development projects, underscoring its commitment to improving livelihoods and promoting sustainable socio-economic development in host communities.

As part of efforts to enhance transparency and accountability, Barrick published a Human Rights Report in April this year, detailing how the company identifies, manages and oversees human rights risks and impacts throughout its operations and supply chains.

Barrick said it continued implementing its Biodiversity Risk and Impact Assessment tool to improve the identification, assessment and management of biodiversity risks across its mining operations and projects.

The company also surpassed its target of achieving an 80 per cent water reuse and recycling rate while continuing engagement with suppliers to address Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions.

Barrick President and Chief Executive Officer, Mark Hill, said sustainability remains central to the company’s long-term growth strategy.

“As we enter an exciting new phase of growth and delivery, sustainability remains fundamental to how we operate. Keeping our people safe, mining responsibly, building strong partnerships and delivering long-term value that is shared by all our stakeholders,” he said.

Mr Hill noted that Barrick maintained an ‘A’ rating on its Sustainability Scorecard during the year, demonstrating consistent performance across the various jurisdictions where it operates.

The latest report comes as global mining companies face growing expectations from investors, governments and communities to balance mineral production with environmental protection, social responsibility and sustainable economic development.
