ENGLAND: THE Government has challenged Team Tanzania to improve on its previous performance at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, urging athletes to compete with determination, discipline and pride as they aim for a bigger medal haul.

Tanzania will participate in the 23rd Commonwealth Games, scheduled for July 23 to August 2, with hopes of surpassing the three medals won at the previous edition in Birmingham, England.

The country will be represented by 12 athletes competing in four sports: athletics (six), boxing (three), judo (two), while there will be one in swimming.

Speaking during the team’s official flagging-off ceremony in Dar es Salaam on Thursday, National Sports Council (NSC) Executive Secretary, Neema Msitha, said Tanzania has a long history of participation at the Commonwealth Games, but must now strive for improved results.

“We have won medals in previous editions, but this time we expect even better results. It is time to improve our performance and rankings. Tanzanians have high expectations, and your achievements will inspire the younger generation to pursue excellence in sport,” Msitha told the participants.

She noted that the Games provide athletes with an opportunity to compete against world-class opponents, gain valuable international experience and build confidence ahead of future global competitions.

“Success at such a prestigious event can also inspire young people across the country to embrace sport as a pathway to discipline, personal development and career opportunities,” she said.

Msitha added that strong performances at the Games would enhance Tanzania’s international profile while showcasing the country’s sporting talent.

Team Captain Collins Saliboko assured Tanzanians that the squad is well prepared and determined to make the nation proud.

“We assure Tanzanians that we have prepared thoroughly. We will give our very best and fight for every opportunity to bring honour to our country,” Saliboko said.

He added that beyond the battle for medals, the Commonwealth Games promote friendship, cultural exchange and unity among member nations through the values of sportsmanship, respect and teamwork.

At the 2022 Commonwealth Games in one of the biggest cities in the United Kingdom, Tanzania won three medals—a silver by long-distance runner Alphonce Simbu and bronze medals from boxers Kassim Bwandwike and Yusuf Changalawe.

Team Tanzania will be aiming to surpass that achievement when competition begins in Glasgow next week.
