ARUSHA: THE Arusha Regional Commissioner, Amos Makalla, has today, July 24, 2026,held talks with Japanese Ambassador to Tanzania Mikami Yoichi on strengthening the long-standing bilateral relations between Tanzania and Japan and expanding cooperation in key development sectors.
The meeting, held at the Regional Commissioner’s office in Arusha, focused on reinforcing the two countries’ enduring partnership for the mutual benefit of their citizens.
Speaking during the meeting, Makalla said Tanzania and Japan have enjoyed close diplomatic ties since the era of the First Phase Government under the late President Mwalimu Julius Nyerere. He thanked the Japanese government for its continued support in financing and implementing various development projects in Tanzania through its embassy.

Makalla also highlighted Arusha’s tourism potential, describing the region as Tanzania’s tourism hub due to its world-renowned attractions, favourable climate and the hospitality of its residents. He invited Ambassador Yoichi and Japanese tourists to visit Arusha and experience its unique attractions.
During the discussions, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in various areas of development and promoting mutually beneficial relations between Tanzania and Japan.
The two leaders also discussed preparations for the upcoming Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly, scheduled to be held in Arusha in October 2026, including efforts to facilitate the participation of Japanese parliamentarians in the international gathering.
