ZANZIBAR: THE Zanzibar government has ordered 29 modern waste management trucks under the BIG-Z Project, supervised by the Ministry of Finance and Planning, to strengthen sanitation services.

Minister of State in the President’s Office (Regional Administration, Local Government and Special Departments), Mr Idrissa Kitwana Mustapha, said two trucks have already arrived and are operational in Zanzibar Municipality.

The remaining 27 trucks are expected to arrive in April 2026. Moreover, the government plans to procure six road-sweeping vehicles capable of sweeping, washing and scrubbing roads.

To further improve waste management infrastructure, the government plans to construct a major waste transfer station at Fuoni Chunga to serve West A and West B municipalities. Finalisation of the contract for the project is underway.

The government has also allocated 111 sites for waste collection centres. Faster Construction Limited will build 73 collection points in Unguja, while Okra Construction Limited will construct 38 collection points in Pemba.

The minister noted that ongoing construction of roads, drainage systems and pedestrian walkways is also contributing to improved cleanliness and enhancing the overall appearance of Zanzibar City
