DAR ES SALAAM: Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) has successfully carried out prostate cancer surgery using minimally invasive techniques, marking a significant step in the adoption of advanced urological procedures in the country.
The procedure, known as Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy, was performed through small incisions and allows patients to recover faster, spend fewer days in hospital, and resume normal activities sooner compared to traditional surgery.
Speaking after the operation, MNH urologist Dr Gift Daniel said the achievement was made possible through a specialised two-day surgical camp and hands-on training that brought together urologists from several countries to share expertise and strengthen specialist care.

“In this camp, we have done surgical procedures on 12 patients with various urinary system conditions, including prostate cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer, renal cysts, as well as other specialist cases. These achievements demonstrate our ability to apply modern technology in delivering specialised services,” said Dr Daniel.
The camp brought together specialists from Tanzania, China, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda, fostering cross-border collaboration in advanced urological care.
More than 200 local specialists also observed the procedures live online, enabling wider knowledge sharing and exposure to modern surgical techniques across healthcare facilities in the country.
