DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government has proposed significant reductions in fees for online content licenses, a move aimed at improving the business environment and accelerating the growth of the country’s digital economy.
Presenting the Government’s revenue and expenditure estimates for the 2026/2027 financial year in Parliament, Minister of Finance , Khamis Mussa Omar said the reforms form part of the National Business Environment Improvement Programme (MKUMBI) and broader efforts to remove barriers affecting the development of various sectors.
According to the Minister, the Government plans to amend the Electronic and Postal Communications (Online Content) Regulations by substantially reducing fees associated with online content licenses.
The measure is intended to encourage greater public participation, particularly among young people, in digital economic activities.
Under the proposed changes, the application fee for an online content service license will be reduced from 50,000/- to 10,000/-. Initial, annual, and renewal fees for the license will also be lowered from 500,000/- to 50,000/-.
In addition, the application fee for an Online Content Aggregator license will be reduced from 100,000/- to 20,000/-.
The initial, annual, and renewal fees for this category will be cut from 1,000,000/- to 100,000/-.
The Government expects the reductions to create more opportunities for online content creators, attract greater investment into the digital sector, and contribute to the expansion of a technology-driven economy.
Young people, who make up a significant portion of the country’s digital workforce and content creation industry, are expected to be among the main beneficiaries of the new measures.
