
LINDI: THE Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) has launched the construction of a 5.7bn/- Songo Songo Ferry project, aimed at transforming transport services and boosting social and economic activities for residents of Songosongo Island and Kilwa Kivinje.
The project, which is fully financed by TPDC through its internally generated revenue, is part of the corporation’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives to improve community welfare and support sustainable development.
Speaking during the launch, Lindi Regional Commissioner, Zainab Tellack, commended TPDC for investing in projects that directly benefit communities and demonstrate the contribution of the energy sector to national development.
She said the decision by TPDC to channel CSR funds back to communities reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring natural resources contribute to improving citizens’ livelihoods.

“I commend TPDC for showing how the energy sector can directly contribute to the development of Tanzanians,” she said.
Representing TPDC Managing Director, Director of Finance and Administration, Francis Mwakapalila said the project is part of the corporation’s broader strategy to strengthen relations with communities surrounding its operations while improving access to essential services.
He said the investment demonstrates TPDC’s commitment to social responsibility and improving the lives of people living near its project areas.
Upon completion, the Songosongo Ferry is expected to provide a lasting solution to transport challenges facing residents, improve movement of people and goods, expand business opportunities and accelerate economic growth in Songosongo and Kilwa Kivinje.
The project is also expected to strengthen the foundation for sustainable development in Lindi Region by improving connectivity and supporting local economic activities.
