DODOMA: When thousands of feet hit the streets of Dodoma on July 26, the sound will represent more than a sporting competition. It will mark the continued rise of an event that has evolved into a platform for economic activity, tourism promotion, health advocacy and community engagement.
The seventh edition of the NBC Dodoma Marathon is expected to attract more than 13,000 runners and nearly 20,000 visitors, including supporters, families and spectators, turning Tanzania’s capital into a centre of sporting excitement and commercial opportunity.
The marathon, which will take place at Jamhuri Stadium, is expected to be officiated by Prime Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba, bringing together professional athletes, recreational runners and thousands of citizens united by a shared passion for sport and healthy living.
However, beyond the medals and finish lines, the event represents a growing example of how sporting activities can contribute to broader national development goals. For Dodoma, the marathon has become an annual economic engine.
The arrival of thousands of visitors creates increased demand for hotels, restaurants, transport services, retail businesses and other hospitality-related activities.
As the city prepares to welcome participants from across Tanzania and beyond, local businesses are expected to benefit from increased customer traffic. From accommodation providers hosting visitors to food vendors serving hungry runners, the marathon creates opportunities that extend far beyond the race route.
Dodoma Regional Commissioner Ms Rosemary Senyamule said the event has become one of the region’s most important annual activities, providing economic benefits while strengthening the city’s image as a destination capable of hosting major national and international events. She urged residents and businesses to take advantage of the opportunities created by the influx of visitors while also ensuring smooth movement during the event.
“The marathon has grown into one of Dodoma’s most impactful annual events,” she said, noting that the expected visitors would provide a significant boost to different sectors of the local economy.
With thousands of people expected to move around the city, traffic management will be a key priority. Motorists have been advised to use the newly constructed Dodoma Ring Road, particularly during race day, to reduce congestion and allow participants to compete safely.
The Regional Commissioner encouraged residents to support the runners along the routes while advising motorists without urgent commitments to avoid unnecessary journeys during the marathon. The message is simple: on marathon day, patience will be just as important as speed.

After all, while runners are competing to reach the finish line first, motorists will simply be trying to reach their destinations without creating their own “traffic marathon.” The marathon route will pass through selected areas of Dodoma, requiring cooperation between residents, authorities and road users to ensure safety and a successful event.
Beyond the race itself, organisers have expanded the marathon experience by introducing activities designed to promote business, culture and tourism. Among the key events is the Dodoma Wine Festival, which highlights the region’s growing grape and wine industry.
Dodoma is widely recognised as Tanzania’s leading grape-producing area, and the festival provides a platform for showcasing locally produced wines while attracting visitors interested in agriculture, food and tourism experiences.
The NBC Dodoma Marathon Expo will also provide opportunities for entrepreneurs, businesses and stakeholders to interact with participants and visitors, creating a space for networking, marketing and investment promotion. The combination of sports, business and cultural activities reflects a modern approach to event organisation, where a marathon becomes more than a one-day competition.
The event also carries a strong social responsibility message. Organisers continue to use the marathon to support important healthcare initiatives, including efforts to reduce maternal and newborn deaths during childbirth, fund life-saving heart surgeries for children and strengthen the Bone Marrow Transplant Fund for children living with sickle cell disease.
This connection between sport and social impact demonstrates how large public events can contribute to addressing important community challenges. According to organisers, athletes participating in the 42-kilometre race will compete for attractive prizes, with winners in both the men’s and women’s categories set to receive TZS 11.5 million each. Additional incentives will be provided to athletes who break existing course records.
Such rewards are expected to attract competitive runners while raising the standard of the event and strengthening its reputation within regional athletics.
NBC Head of Communications and Public Relations Mr Godwin Semunyu confirmed that preparations had been completed, with participants in the 5km, 10km, 21km and 42km races arriving in Dodoma ahead of the event.
He said this year’s marathon had been designed as a complete experience rather than a single sporting activity. The programme includes the Dodoma Wine Festival on July 24, the NBC Dodoma Marathon Expo on July 25 and entertainment performances featuring some of Tanzania’s leading artists, including Marioo.
The expanded programme is expected to increase visitor engagement while providing additional economic benefits to businesses and service providers. The growth of the NBC Dodoma Marathon reflects a wider recognition of sports as a tool for national development.
Around the world, major sporting events have demonstrated their ability to promote destinations, attract investment, encourage healthy lifestyles and create employment opportunities. For Tanzania, the marathon provides another opportunity to showcase Dodoma’s potential as an administrative, commercial and tourism centre.
The event also encourages citizens to embrace physical fitness at a time when awareness of healthy lifestyles continues to grow. Running requires little more than determination, suitable shoes and commitment—although organisers may argue that a good breakfast afterwards is equally important.
As Dodoma prepares for another historic race, the marathon’s message extends beyond competition. It represents cooperation between government institutions, private sector players, athletes, communities and sponsors working together towards a common goal.

The seventh edition of the NBC Dodoma Marathon is therefore not only about who crosses the finish line first.
It is about creating opportunities, promoting health, strengthening tourism and demonstrating the power of collective action. For a city rapidly growing in importance, the marathon has become a symbol of ambition and progress. Every step taken on the route represents a step towards a more connected, healthier and economically vibrant Dodoma.
