BUKOBA: THE eight councils in Kagera Region-Muleba, Biharamulo, Bukoba MC, Ngara, Karagwe, Kyerwa, Missenyi and Bukoba DC have set an ambitious target of creating 16,000 jobs for youth during 2026. Each council will establish at least 2,000 jobs.

This was among the strategies recommended during a three-days year-end festival known locally as Ijuk’Omuka, with the Theme ‘Make Kagera Great Again’ held over the weekend.

Kagera Regional Commissioner, Ms Fatma Mwassa who chaired the meeting encouraged District Commissioners and District Executive Directors in the respective councils to work as a team to ensure the plan succeeds.

“We have abundant economic opportunities available in the region, including favourable investment climate across multiple sectors. Citizens should maximise economic opportunities arising from the year-end festival,” she said.

She assured potential investors that Kagera is well prepared for investment, highlighting the availability of fertile land, security, absence of bureaucratic hurdles and a reliable work force. Ms Mwassa commended President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her great efforts in improving the lives of Tanzania’s citizens.

“During her tenure, President Samia has worked tirelessly to increase access to education and healthcare, as well as to reduce poverty and improve the country’s infrastructure. These efforts have helped to make Tanzania one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa,” Ms Mwassa said.

Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry for Youth Development, Dr Kedmon Mapana, who represented the Minister, Dr Joel Nanauka, expressed satisfaction on how youth groups in Kagera had maximised the 10 per cent funds allocated by the government through councils for youth development.

“After getting a report from several youth groups I have been highly impressed. I will table the report before the Minister so that other regions can borrow a leaf from the Kagera experience,” he said.

Meanwhile, Karagwe District Commissioner, Mr Kalanga Laizer advised the eight councils in Kagera Region to set aside land for construction of modern hotels with aim to increase the number of tourists.

“The tourism sector has not been fully utilised. The eight councils in Kagera Region should set aside land for construction of modern hotels with aim to increase the number of tourists,” he said.
