DAR ES SALAAM: Tanzania is advancing its maritime diplomacy and investment drive as the Tanzania Shipping Agency (TASAC) takes part in the 57th International Algiers Exhibition (FIA 2026), aimed at expanding global trade and investment linkages.

The exhibition, which opened on Monday in Algiers, Algeria, has brought together hundreds of companies and institutions from across the world, serving as a platform for showcasing products, services, technology, and investment opportunities.

Information available from TASAC indicates that participants include Algeria, Tanzania, China, Turkey, Italy, France, India, Tunisia, Egypt, Germany, Spain, and other countries, all engaging in trade and investment discussions across multiple sectors.

At the exhibition, TASAC is presenting Tanzania’s maritime regulatory services while promoting opportunities in shipping, port development, and maritime transport investment.

The agency says the engagement is aimed at strengthening international cooperation, attracting investors, and opening new markets to support growth in Tanzania’s shipping and maritime trade sector.

TASAC is among the institutions representing Tanzania at the global event, which ends today.

On the other hand, the government has intensified investment in maritime safety and emergency response systems, with a renewed push to strengthen search and rescue operations across Tanzania’s waterways.

Speaking on Thursday during a visit to TASAC’s search and rescue vessel at Kigoma Port as part of the 16th World Seafarers’ Day celebrations, Transport Minister Prof. Makame Mbarawa said maritime transport safety remains a national priority amid rising water transport activity.

He said the government is scaling up investment in infrastructure, equipment, and modern rescue vessels to ensure faster response to emergencies and improved safety for passengers and cargo transport.

“Maritime safety is a priority for the Government because it concerns the protection of citizens’ lives and property. We will continue to invest in search and rescue services to ensure citizens receive safe and reliable services,” he said.

Prof. Mbarawa said the government has already supported the acquisition of modern search and rescue boats worth more than Sh2 billion, boosting response capacity in both lake and ocean transport routes.

For his part, TASAC Director General Mr. Mohamed Salum said the agency is further extending its rescue coverage, with additional vessels planned for Mtwara Port and other high-traffic maritime zones.

He said the move aligns with government efforts to strengthen the blue economy while improving safety standards for seafarers, traders, and passengers.

The minister’s Kigoma visit forms part of activities marking the 16th World Seafarers’ Day 2026.
