DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government plans to construct 10 new CNG stations across the country as part of efforts to promote cleaner and cheaper energy for transport.
The Deputy Minister for Energy, Salome Makamba, told this to Parliamentarians in Dodoma today, May 28, 2026, noting that the government, through the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) in collaboration with the private sector, is preparing to build the stations in Dar es Salaam (eight), Mtwara (one) and Morogoro (one).
The minister was responding to a question from Mtwara Rural MP Arif Suleman Premji, who wanted to know the government’s strategy on CNG investment following the removal of a 382/- per kilogram tax to encourage its use in vehicles.
Additionally, the minister said that TPDC is finalising procurement for five mobile CNG stations, which will be deployed in Dar es Salaam (two), Morogoro (one at Ardhi University area), and Dodoma (two in Mtumba Government City and Chako ni Chako areas).

“The government, together with private investors, is currently overseeing a total of 18 operational CNG stations in Dar es Salaam, Mtwara and Coast regions,” she said.
Moreover, she stated that discussions are ongoing with six private companies to develop mini-LNG projects to convert natural gas into liquid form for transport using specialized trucks to regions not yet connected to gas pipeline infrastructure.
Furthermore, she said that in regions already served by the gas pipeline, including Mtwara, the government is prioritising household and institutional gas distribution through pipelines to ensure communities directly benefit from the resource.
