KONGWA: RESIDENTS of Gairo, Mpwapwa, Kongwa, Chamwino, and Kiteto districts are expected to benefit from a more reliable electricity supply following the completion of power distribution improvement projects implemented by the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) at a cost of more than TZS 10.5 billion.
The projects include a Power Distribution Switching Station, a 20 MVA Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) transformer, and a 92-kilometre 33-kilovolt power transmission line from the Zuzu Substation to Mbande.
Speaking during the inauguration of the projects on June 16, 2026, in Mbande, Kongwa District, the Minister for Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi, said the investment is part of the Sixth Phase Government’s efforts under the leadership of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, to ensure citizens have access to reliable electricity for social and economic activities.
He noted that the projects have significantly improved the power distribution system in the area. Previously, faults occurring in one district often caused power outages in neighboring districts.
“This station has enhanced the reliability of electricity supply. We sincerely thank the President for the substantial investment made. In the past, the challenges were significant, especially during the rainy season when faults in one district affected electricity services in other districts. Today, we are witnessing the benefits of this investment for our citizens,” said Ndejembi.
The Minister added that the Government will continue investing in the energy sector through various strategic projects aimed at strengthening electricity generation, transmission, and distribution nationwide to meet the country’s growing development needs and increasing demand for power.
For her part, the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals, Subira Mgalu, said the implementation of electricity projects continues to yield positive results for citizens and contributes to advancing the Government’s development agenda.
“We are encouraged by the tremendous work being done by TANESCO to ensure Tanzanians receive reliable electricity services. Previously, these areas experienced frequent power outages, but the Sixth Phase Government has made substantial investments through TANESCO, and the results are clearly visible,” said Mgalu.
Meanwhile, the District Commissioner for Kongwa, Mayeka Simon Mayeka, urged residents and investors to take advantage of the reliable electricity supply by establishing income-generating activities, including processing industries, businesses, and other economic ventures that will accelerate development in the area.
On his part, TANESCO Managing Director, Mr Lazaro Twange, said that for many years residents of Kongwa and neighboring areas depended on a single 33-kilovolt power line from Dodoma City, which created challenges in ensuring a reliable power supply due to increasing demand.
He explained that the completion of the projects has strengthened the electricity distribution network in the region and significantly reduced the challenges that previously affected service delivery.
“Previously, there was only one electricity distribution line serving five different districts. Growing electricity demand and expanding investment opportunities began to strain the system. Since these projects became operational, we have witnessed substantial improvements, and service-related challenges have been reduced by more than 90 percent,” said Mr Twange.
The completion of these projects is expected to further enhance access to reliable electricity, create more investment opportunities, stimulate economic activities, and improve the delivery of social services in the districts of Gairo, Mpwapwa, Kongwa, Chamwino, and Kiteto.
