DODOMA: PLANS to construct a modern market in Kisarawe Town have moved a step closer following submission of a project proposal to the Prime Minister’s Office (Regional Administration and Local Government) for funding consideration.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office (Regional Administration and Local Government), Dr Festo Dugange, told the National Assembly yesterday that the proposal is currently under review.

He said this while responding to a basic question from Kisarawe MP Dr Selemani Jafo (CCM), who sought to know when a modern market would be constructed in the town.

In response, Dr Dugange said Kisarawe District Council has already secured a 2,633-squaremetre plot in Kisarawe Ward for implementation of the project.

He said the council prepared a project proposal seeking funds for construction of the market and submitted it to the Prime Minister’s Office (Regional Administration and Local Government) in April this year.

“The proposal is currently under review and, once the assessment is completed and all required criteria are met, it will be forwarded to the Planning Commission and the Ministry of Finance for consideration of funding,” he said.

The deputy minister told lawmakers that the planned market is expected to improve the business environment and create more opportunities for traders and entrepreneurs in the district.

Responding to a supplementary question from Kyela MP Mr Baraka Mwambengo (CCM), who wanted to know when funds would be provided for construction and improvement of tarmac roads around the market.

Dr Dugange said 500m/- will be allocated in the 2027/28 financial year for rehabilitation and improvement of deteriorated roads in Kyela District, including roads surrounding Kyela Town Market.

“Kyela District has 7.57 kilometres of tarmac roads maintained by the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA), some of which serve the market area,” he said.

According to him, several road sections have deteriorated and require rehabilitation to facilitate smooth movement of people and goods.

“The government will allocate 500m/- in the 2027/28 budget for the rehabilitation and improvement of worn-out roads, including those surrounding Kyela Market,” he said.

He added that efforts to strengthen the district’s road network through construction, rehabilitation and routine maintenance will continue to support trade, transport and delivery of social services.
