NEW YORK: TANZANIA continues to use Open Source Technology as a key tool to accelerate digital transformation in the delivery of public services, build digital freedom and strengthen systems that meet the needs of citizens, the Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Angellah Kairuki, said today, June 27, 2026.
Minister Kairuki said this while addressing the UN Open Source Week 2026 held in New York, United States of America.
She said the move enables the government to fully own and control its digital infrastructure as well as protect important government information.
In addition, She explained that Tanzania has created an enabling environment through various laws and systems including the e-Government Authority Act of 2020, and the Personal Information Protection Act (Chapter 44) of 2023, which has enabled the country to have specific guidelines and procedures for building digital systems for public institutions using open source technologies.
She added that many government systems have been built using these technologies, a move that reduces software licensing costs and increases service efficiency.
She said the government has strengthened the management of digital systems through the e-Government Authority (e-GA), which is responsible for setting standards and ensuring that public institutions adhere to technical guidelines.
“This step has contributed to strengthening information security, system integration, using local experts to build and manage systems and thus ensuring better use of government resources.
