DAR ES SALAAM: THE Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair has evolved far beyond an annual exhibition. Over the past 50 years, it has become one of Tanzania’s strongest engines for trade, investment and economic diplomacy, generating business opportunities worth approximately 129.23tri/- , while connecting the country to regional and global markets. As Tanzania embraces Development Vision 2050, DITF must be viewed not merely as an event, but as a strategic national investment.
The figures speak for themselves. More than 10 million visitors, over 38,000 exhibitors and participation from 54 countries demonstrate the fair’s growing international relevance. Equally impressive is its contribution to employment, with more than 631,900 jobs created over five decades and another 21,000 expected during this year’s exhibition. Such achievements reinforce DITF’s role in driving inclusive economic growth.
Yet the greatest value of Sabasaba cannot always be measured in sales or signed contracts. Sometimes the biggest investment begins with curiosity. A student asking questions at an agriculture pavilion, a young innovator discovering new technology or an aspiring entrepreneur networking with investors may leave with ideas capable of shaping tomorrow’s economy. Development Vision 2050 calls for a competitive, innovative and knowledge-driven economy.
DITF provides exactly the environment where those ambitions can be nurtured. By bringing together businesses, innovators, educational institutions and government agencies, the fair offers practical lessons that no classroom alone can provide.
Young people should therefore approach Sabasaba with notebooks as eagerly as shopping bags. Visiting exhibitions organised by institutions promoting agriculture, industrial development, finance, entrepreneurship, science and technology can broaden perspectives and inspire future careers. A free brochure or meaningful conversation could become the first chapter of a successful business journey. Sometimes the best souvenir from Sabasaba is not what fits inside a carrier bag but what remains inside the mind.
The government’s ambition to transform DITF into a platform where business meets technology, innovation meets investment and local enterprises connect with regional and global value chains deserves public support. Equally important is advancing products under the Made in Tanzania brand, strengthening competitiveness and expanding export opportunities.

This year’s exhibition should therefore attract visitors seeking more than entertainment. Families, students, entrepreneurs and professionals should attend with purpose, ask questions, build networks and embrace learning. In doing so, every visit to Sabasaba becomes a small but meaningful contribution toward the prosperous, innovative and globally competitive Tanzania envisioned in Development Vision 2050.
