ZANZIBAR: MAJOR infrastructure projects underway in Unguja and Pemba are boosting economic growth, creating jobs and strengthening Zanzibar’s position as a regional hub for tourism, trade and investment, Second Vice-President Hemed Suleiman Abdulla has said.

Speaking during an inspection tour of development projects in Unguja, Mr Abdulla said the government remains committed to investing in strategic infrastructure to support long-term economic development and improve public services.

“These projects reflect a clear vision and long-term investment strategy. They are not only for today’s generation, but for the future prosperity of Zanzibar,” he said.

At the Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (AAKIA), he inspected the nearly completed Terminal II and its commercial complex, saying the facility will significantly improve passenger handling capacity and enhance the islands’ aviation services.

Minister for Works and Transport, Dr Khalid Salum Mohammed, said the upgraded airport will be capable of handling up to three million passengers annually to meet the growing demand driven by increased tourist arrivals and business travel.

He added that the project is expected to be completed ahead of next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, enabling the airport to provide improved services to international visitors.

Project engineer Emanuel Holehole said construction is in its final stages and includes a three-storey office block, passenger terminal, banking facilities, two restaurant buildings and expanded parking areas for staff and visitors.

The project is estimated to cost 34 million US dollars for the terminal and an additional 4.5 million US dollars for the commercial complex.

Mr Abdulla said airports play a critical role in supporting tourism, trade and investment through improved connectivity and increased economic activity.

The Second Vice-President also inspected the Mangapwani integrated port and fuel offloading and storage facility, where he said modern infrastructure and improved fuel management systems are helping to strengthen energy security and reduce losses.

He called on the Zanzibar Ports Corporation and its partners to prioritise employment opportunities for qualified Zanzibaris during project implementation.

“Local participation is essential to ensure that the benefits of these investments are felt directly by our people through jobs and business opportunities,” he said.

During the tour, Mr Abdulla also visited the 2.2-kilometre Magereza-Kinazini road project, expressing satisfaction with the progress of the works while cautioning against encroachment on road reserves.

He directed contractors and consultants to ensure that all projects are completed on schedule and in accordance with the required standards to guarantee long-term value.

Officials accompanying the tour said the ongoing investments are contributing to economic growth, employment creation and improved infrastructure services across Zanzibar.
