MWANZA: EDUCATION stakeholders have continued to support the Government’s efforts to improve the education sector in the country after Nourish Africa in collaboration with Orica Tanzania Limited donated 16 computers to Mwanza Girls’ Secondary School as well as implementing a clean and safe water project for the construction of one well at Misungwi Technical Secondary School. The total assistance is worth 39m/-..

Speaking during the handover today in Mwanza, the Executive Director of Nourish Africa, Ms Barbina Andrew, said their partnership with Orica Tanzania aims to improve the lives of students by ensuring they have access to a better learning environment.

She said the assistance aims to enhance the learning environment for students through the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in conjunction with improving access to water services, a move expected to increase the effectiveness of learning and teaching.

She said that in addition to access to water, the organization is promoting the cultivation of vegetable gardens in schools so that students can get good nutrition which is important for their health and academic development.

“We are happy to see these students now having more time to study instead of following the water. We would also like to see schools establishing vegetable gardens to improve the nutrition of students,” Ms Andrew.

Ms Andrew said that at Mwanza Girls’ Secondary School in Magu District, which has over 800 students, the computers are expected to enable students to learn digitally and build skills that are in line with the needs of today’s technology-dependent world.

The principal of Mwanza Girls’ Secondary School, Ms Mecktilda Shija, said the equipment will enhance teaching using ICT from Form One to Six.

“Using computers, we will teach all classes from Form One to Six using technology. As you know, many jobs now depend on the use of technology, so we will ensure that our students receive education that is up to date,” She said.

On her side, General Manager of Orica Tanzania Limited, Ms Asha Mambo, said the company has decided to give back to the community by addressing areas of greatest need, especially education and basic services.

She said the water project will enable students to spend more time in class instead of spending it chasing water, thus increasing achievement levels and improving the learning environment.

“We are happy to contribute to a community in need. We believe this clean and safe water project along with educational support will help students focus on their studies instead of wasting time searching for water,” said Mambo.

She added that the project does not only benefit the students, but also the residents of the village surrounding the school, the nearby primary school and the health center in the area.
