
NEW YORK, USA: Minister of State in the President’s Office – Planning and Investment, Prof Kitila Mkumbo, today presented Tanzania’s Third Voluntary National Review (VNR) on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the United Nations High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, currently underway in New York, United States.
During the presentation, Prof Mkumbo highlighted key achievements recorded through the government’s implementation of the SDGs.
Among them was the increase in access to clean water in rural areas, which rose from 72.3 per cent in 2020 to 85.3 percent in 2025.
He also highlighted progress in the energy sector, noting that electricity access has increased to 86.2 percent of the population, while the country’s electricity generation capacity has more than doubled.
The report further shows that Tanzania has made significant progress in SDG 9 on industry, innovation and infrastructure, contributing to an increase in railway passengers from 1.2 million to 4.1 million.
On SDG 17, which focuses on partnerships for sustainable development, Prof Mkumbo said the implementation of the goals has been driven by strong collaboration among all stakeholders, including the private sector, civil society organisations and development partners.

“More than 824 civil society organisations and 1,000 private sector institutions participated in the preparation of this report,” he said.
Prof Mkumbo also outlined seven priority areas that will accelerate the implementation of the SDGs through the National Development Vision 2050 and the Fourth Five-Year Development Plan (FYDP IV).
Overall, Tanzania demonstrated not only the progress it has made towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals but also its commitment to accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development during the four years remaining before the global deadline.
