ADDIS ABABA: TANZANIA has welcomed the return of Sudan’s transitional government to Khartoum, hailing it as a major step toward restoring state authority and rebuilding the capital after years of conflict.

Speaking yesterday at the African Union (AU) Ministerial Meeting of the Peace and Security Council on Sudan and Somalia, held at the Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Hall at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, underscored Tanzania’s commitment to regional peace.

“We welcome the return of the Sudanese transitional government to Khartoum. This marks a significant step by the people of Sudan toward the restoration of state authority, the resumption of normal life, and the initiation of reconstruction, said Ambassador Kombo, according to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“We call upon the international community to continue supporting Sudanese authorities in pursuing an inclusive, Sudanese-led dialogue, essential for lasting political stability,” he said.

On Somalia, Minister Kombo reaffirmed Tanzania’s support for the Federal Republic of Somalia and condemned any actions that could undermine or fragment its territory.

“We strongly underscore the need to respect Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence, as enshrined in its Provisional Constitution, the African Union Constitutive Act, and the UN Charter,” he emphasised.

He stressed that it is for the Somali people to agree on a governance system that protects the interests of all regions, urging the international community to support Somalia’s stability and avoid actions that threaten its unity.

Kombo added that external engagement should prioritise meaningful dialogue between Somalia and Somaliland. He also commended the troop and police contributing countries of the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) for their dedication and sacrifices in maintaining peace.
