DAR ES SALAAM: The Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations, Deus Sangu, has urged the self-employed Tanzanians to join social security funds to build savings that will support them in old age.

Speaking during an event to hand over membership cards to new members from the informal sector, Sangu said the government continues to encourage citizens to enroll in social security schemes in order to strengthen their long-term financial security. He added that he will closely oversee members’ contributions to ensure the funds are managed efficiently and deliver tangible benefits to the public.

He explained that under the scheme, members are entitled to several benefits including old-age pension, survivors’ benefits for dependents, disability benefits, maternity benefits, as well as medical and funeral benefits.

Sangu further noted that the campaign by the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) is specifically targeting people earning their livelihoods in the informal sector. These include individuals engaged in agriculture, livestock keeping, fishing, small-scale mining, petty trade, street vending, motorcycle taxi services (bodaboda), and other forms of self-employment.

He emphasized that broader participation in social security funds is essential for strengthening financial protection and improving future livelihood security for workers in both the formal and informal sectors across the country.
