DODOMA: THE government has called for greater participation of the private sector, diplomatic missions and international organisations in efforts to transform Dodoma into a world-class capital city and a key economic hub for Tanzania and the region.
Speaking yesterday while presenting the government’s budget estimates for the 2026/27 financial year, Minister for Finance, Ambassador Khamis Mussa Omar, said the city’s transformation is a shared responsibility that goes beyond government efforts alone.
He said strategic infrastructure projects, including the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and Msalato International Airport, are expected to accelerate Dodoma’s growth and strengthen Tanzania’s broader economic ambitions. He expressed confidence that continued investment in infrastructure and public services would further strengthen Dodoma’s role as a driver of national development, regional integration and investment attraction.
Amb Omar recalled that Dodoma was officially declared the country’s capital through Presidential Decree No. 320 of 1973 under the leadership of the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.
He noted that the Executive branch officially relocated to Dodoma in 2017 during the fifth phase government under the late President John Pombe Magufuli, marking a significant milestone in the implementation of the capital relocation agenda.

According to the minister, President Samia Suluhu Hassan has accelerated the city’s transformation under the “Kazi Iendelee” agenda, with all three arms of the State now operating from the national capital.
“All arms of the State have relocated to Dodoma, with the Judiciary operating from a modern court complex that serves as a model for the African continent, while development of the Government City in Mtumba continues to advance to a unique standard,” he explained.
The Minister noted that the Chamwino State House has been completed and continues to serve as the nation’s principal centre of leadership. Amb Omar said Dodoma has undergone remarkable transformation over the years, evolving from a relatively quiet town into a vibrant and fastgrowing capital city.
He also noted that February this year marked 30 years since Parliament became the first arm of the State to relocate to Dodoma. “I would like to use this opportunity to congratulate Parliament, through you, Mr Speaker, for being the first arm of the State to move to Dodoma,” he stated.
