Unguja. The government’s drive to expand specialised healthcare services has received a boost after Floton Africa donated Sh30 million towards the establishment of a Bone Marrow and Treatment Centre at Benjamin Mkapa Hospital.
The donation forms part of the ongoing nationwide fundraising campaign launched to commemorate the hospital’s 10th anniversary, with proceeds earmarked to improve treatment for patients suffering from sickle cell disease and those requiring kidney transplants.
Receiving the cheque on behalf of the initiative, South Unguja Regional Commissioner Hamida Mussa Khamis commended Floton Africa for supporting the government’s efforts to strengthen access to specialised healthcare services.
She said the fundraising campaign is being coordinated nationally by the Tanzania Women’s Organisation (UWT), while Regional and District Commissioners are mobilising support from individuals, companies and development partners across the country.
“The specialised services now available at Benjamin Mkapa Hospital are benefiting Tanzanians from both the Mainland and Zanzibar. We therefore encourage more investors and stakeholders to contribute towards this important national initiative,” she said.
The Regional Commissioner noted that the fundraising exercise will continue until July 11, culminating in a national fundraising gala in Dodoma.
Presenting the donation, Floton Africa Director Swapna Brahmaroutu, said the company believes sustainable development goes beyond infrastructure investment to include improving the wellbeing of communities.
“Supporting healthcare is an investment in people. We are honoured to contribute towards this initiative, which will help expand access to specialised treatment and improve the lives of many Tanzanian families,” she said.
The funds will support the establishment of specialised bone marrow treatment services while strengthening advanced medical care for patients requiring complex treatment.
Floton Africa, which has investments in Paje, Zanzibar, said the contribution is part of its broader corporate social responsibility programme covering healthcare, education, environmental sustainability and community development.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with the government in initiatives that promote inclusive and sustainable national development.
