GEITA: THE Minister for Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, has directed the contractor implementing the 28 Towns Water Supply Project in Chato District to accelerate construction works to ensure the project is completed by September as scheduled.
Mavunde issued the directive during an inspection tour of the project, which is valued at more than 40bn/- and is expected to provide clean and safe water to approximately 185,000 residents.
Speaking after the inspection, the minister said he was satisfied with the progress achieved so far but stressed the importance of completing the project on time to address persistent water supply challenges facing residents of 29 villages in Chato District.

Geita Regional Commissioner Martine Shigela said the government continues to invest substantial resources in water infrastructure projects to improve access to clean water and reduce the burden faced by communities, particularly women and children who spend long hours fetching water.
Shigela noted that, in addition to the 28 Towns Water Supply Project in Chato, the government is also implementing another major water project in Geita District worth more than TZS 124 billion. The project is aimed at expanding access to clean and safe water for residents across the district.
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer of the Chato Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (CHAWASA), Engineer Issack Mgeni, said the project is now 85 percent complete and has entered its final implementation phase. He added that efforts are underway to ensure the project is completed within the scheduled timeframe.
