ZANZIBAR: TANZANIA Editors Forum (TEF) Chairman Deodatus Balile has welcomed the reconciliation between Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and ACT-Wazalendo, describing political understanding as vital to protecting the country’s peace, stability and economic progress.
Balile, who is also President of the Eastern Africa Editors Society, said the agreement between the two parties was an important step towards creating an environment where Tanzanians could focus on nation-building regardless of their political affiliations.
Speaking to the Daily News in an exclusive interview in Zanzibar, Balile said easing political tensions and removing threats of conflict would benefit society as a whole, from businesses and workers to patients seeking medical care.
“It is a good thing that our country has reached a point where there is understanding. Whether one comes from the opposition or the ruling party, the main responsibility is one, building the nation,” Balile said.
According to Balile, political instability does not affect the government alone, noting that ordinary citizens and businesses often suffer when tensions disrupt daily life and economic activities.
“When there are threats or demonstrations, it does not affect the government alone. A food vendor may fail to do business, a shopkeeper may not open the shop, and even a patient going to hospital may do so with fear. That is why we need peace,” he said.

Balile described peace as one of Tanzania’s most valuable national assets, saying it must be protected to ensure citizens continue to live and work together in harmony.
He made the remarks in Zanzibar after witnessing a historic reconciliation event between CCM and ACT-Wazalendo at the State House grounds, following years of political differences between the two parties.
He said the decision to move from confrontation to dialogue and cooperation was a positive development that could strengthen national unity and create a more favourable environment for Tanzania’s social and economic development.
